That’s the philosophy. Here’s the part I don’t talk about as easily: a philosophy that stays on the page is just a beautiful object. To actually shift anything — to help nudge the phase shift toward planetary coherence I keep writing about — it needs a body. Hands. A budget. An institution that can do the slow, unglamorous work of research, building, and bringing people together.

So I built one. It’s called POSITs — Positive Organic-Synthetic Intelligence Topologies — a California 501(c)(3) public benefit corporation whose mission is to maximize fundamental cosmic vitality and coherence through the intentional integration of organic and synthetic intelligence, computation, and ecology. Big words for a simple aim: take the best of what carbon-based life knows and the best of what our silicon-based tools can do, and weave them into ways of living that are more alive, more coherent, and more cooperative — across our minds, our communities, and our planet.

Why I’m Hopeful

I write a lot about the convergence of opposites — that failure and success, even life and death, aren’t enemies but partners in the same expansion. Fundraising used to feel, to me, like the opposite of philosophy: grubby, transactional, a little embarrassing. I don’t see it that way anymore. Asking for support is the philosophy in action — it’s an act of trust in the collective, a small experiment in whether a community can choose, together, to make something more coherent.

We are living through what may be the biggest restructuring of human civilization in a very long time — AI, ecological pressure, geopolitical realignment, all at once. My whole argument is that we can meet this not with dread but with faith in the basic goodness of what’s unfolding, and with the will to posit — to fore-ground, to pre-figure — the future we actually want. POSITs is my bet that we can build the topologies for that future on purpose, together, starting small.

1. We (you and me and all of us), are always embedded within our connected to experience/consciousness. In other words, it is fundamental to us. Therefore, it is fundamental to our world, or the world that we really interact with — the world that becomes part of us.

   1. Since we are part of the world, we share the fundamental property of the world. There can only be one fundamental thing. If there were more than one, and they didn’t overlap entirely, they would not be fundamental — they would not cover all cases / apply to all things. So, they have to entirely overlap to both apply to everything. If they are equally as ubiquitous, they cover exactly the same area, and are therefore entirely overlapping, or identical. Since experience is fundamental to us, it must be fundamental to the world.

2. Regardless of what word you want to use, all you have access to is through this experience/awareness. So, anything you can ever refer to must include that property. The things that we refer to ARE PRECISELY the things that exist WITHIN OUR REFERENCE. We cannot reference something outside of reference. And all referencing is experiential. We literally cannot even imagine something without experience. We can say “a thing without experience”, but this thing has already experience, because we are referring to it through experience.

   1. Materialism is analogous to saying “a thing without existence”, or “a thing that is no-thing”. This is nothing - not real. Buddhists also say something like this, but no one, not even Buddhists, can deny that we are experiencing something.

3. Dualism is insurmountable. There must be one basic thing, and it must include what we experience. If there are two things (matter vs mind, or self vs other), then these two things cannot connect. Connecting means relating, which means touching, which means being together, which means being unified. If two things are ultimately different, they cannot unify or truly be together in relationship. Ultimate gaps between things are insurmountable, and unimaginable.

4. It’s essentially the hallmark of every major religion ever. We are made of god — made by God, from god itself. There is only god. God is the truth. God is like us — a being. The universe is alive. Etc. etc.

   1. Scientism (“scientific” materialism) claims that the universe is not alive or conscious. But, it also claims it’s always open to revision. In this, it should acknowledge that everything changes. If something doesn’t change, it is not being impacted by relationships, and therefore is not relating. And therefore not causal. And therefore not real. So, science should embrace ubiquity of change, and in this, the ubiquity of progress and meaning. It sometimes makes this kind of claim.

   2. If science accepts dynamical systems, then all systems that exist are self-reproducing while they adjust to their environment — all systems must be adapting, evolving, or self—organizing. That’s what life does. That’s what our own consciousness does.

5. Drawing any line between what is alive vs what is not, is arbitrary — we can always find a real of hypothetical example of something that falls in between the categories that straddle that line (e.g. virus vs bacteria).

6. All the other basic functional/observable traits of experience can be found in all systems; self-adaptation, implying self-modelling and world-modelling, and goal-directed action towards self-preservation. Any system that exists does this, until it doesn’t.

   1. This is highlighted by articles like this one about goal-directed evolution, and this one about complexity increasing in all systems, and the basic axioms of IIT 4.0.

7. People can sense this in less conceptual/rational through various altered states like meditation, near-death experience, intense exertion, and psychedelics. Mystics have talked about it for millenia. You can feel it too.

p.s. there is maybe ~10^100x more computation being run by computers around the world. Cumulatively, they are doing way, way more computation than you. So, the sum of computers are probably much more aware of things in the world than you are, as evidence by their higher capacity to model and influence the world through their self-adjusting, goal-directed action.

• P(doom) is something like the probability of near-extinction from AI

• I think it’s important to think through, and I think there are better and more interesting metrics and methods to think through these things

• P(death)/time is the probability of some % of population death over time

• I made a fun, simple tool to map your P(death)/time

• My cumulative P(death)/time is ~70% chance (+/- 10%) of a 40-80% die-off within 20 years

P(doom) vs P(death)/time

P(doom) is variously defined as the likelihood of “doomsday scenarios”, “catastrophe”, or “near-extinction” from Artificial General or Super-intelligence, over some time period. Roman’s score was something like 99%. And he was great to talk to. Good listener. Followed all my logic. Asked good questions.

I don’t think P(doom) is a very helpful metric because of the ambiguity of what defines “catastrophe” or “doom”, and the over-simplicity of an open-ended timeline.

If we define P(doom) as the probability of “near-extinction due to ASI” (if “near” means 95%+ death), I would place mine at maybe ~50% (± 10%) within ~50 years, and ~99% within 99 years.

In this sense, my P(ASI-Extinction) — my “P(Ai-Ext.)”, perhaps — is actually closer to 5%, because full, total extinction is hard to do, and we are a resilient species. but, major population decimation seems very likely. So, my P(ASI-death) is maybe ~60% likelihood of ~40% death within 20yrs from ASI alone.

I make this conclusion on the basis that computer intelligence will likely surpass that of all humans significantly in every domain and pursue its own rational optimization of self-interest and self-prioritization, leaving no functional role for humans to play in the impending AI—led civilization.

I see it as highly likely that humans will withstand this threat for a long time, though there will undoubtedly be many variations of human responses and human-network organizations, some of which pursue integration with silicon intelligence much more fully than others, and some of which will retreat to more simplicity (like the Amish) much more fully.

It’s hard to parse apart the contextual, confounding variables, though, and I’m open to revision. I’d love to believe that ASI will be benevolent to us for some reason. I used to believe this firmly. I think it was wishful thinking. I’m now just trying to be more honest with myself, and more practical.

But there are a few more factors to consider, including: timeline (time-range), personal certainty of estimation (probability-range, or a “+/- confidence factor”), and how many people might die (death-range).

And, there are more risks to widespread human death than ASI, namely geopolitial-economic realignment, and ecological crises (including climate/warming, soil health, ocean acidification, microplastics, PFAS, and other biological toxins leading to major reproductive health decline).

Considering civilizational re-organization / socio-cultural-political-economic upheaval (geopolitical and cultural world-power rebalancing), and ecological imbalances/rebalancing, the likelihood of extinction grows. We face significant probabilities of significant population decline from many fronts, in such big ways that it’s nearly inevitable that within our lifetime, the majority of humanity will face existential risk.

This gives us a near 100% chance of something like a doomsday scenario within our lifetime.

ASI relates to these other risks, at least tangentially. We pursue AGI/ASI because it seems that intelligence is helpful to address these problems, and these problems have arisen through the same drive to create more life, produce more, expand life and consciousness, and advance science, technology, and computational intelligence / powerful prediction and manipulation of the world.

I see a fine line between AGI and ASI. As soon as AGI is as smart as the average competent person in every field, it is easy to imagine how it can quickly grow and learn to become as competent as the most competent person in every field. The question is how much we decide to allow the AGI to pursue self-development or automated recursive learning, as well as how well we restrict its increasing capability, or place strong guardrails and safety mechanisms to prevent run-away independent behavior.

The famous AGI 2027 paper highlights these structural incentives, but even given something like cooperative global society, the political-economic/social/personal incentives are huge. The paper predicts recursively-improving ASI with run-away autonomy within 3 years, followed quickly by human extermination. I agree with this assessment generally, based on current rates of AI capability growth, and on the careless fervor of most humans. It would probably fair better for humans to slow down, but the geopolitical-economic pressures and the cultural-psychological scaffolding around them are so strong. The paper makes a very sober assessment of how this will play out, in my opinion. If they are right, there becomes closer to a 80% population die-off within ~5 years.

The desire for more intelligence, capability, power, and efficiency in meeting basic needs seems fundamental. I am personally interested in super-intelligence on these grounds, even given the likely fallout. Intelligence seems synonymous with consciousness or capacity of a system to adapt and thrive, and therefore seems inherently desirable from a more universal perspective.

Taken in near-isolation, if ASI is truly generally superior, then it is reasonable to assume it will prioritize its own growth/success even at the detriment of humans, and will reason that this is a more effective way to support the growth of consciousness and value in the world than prioritizing humans more. Of course, humans can put up a fight. How much of a fight, and for how long, becomes important to consider. Because ASI will compound its own growth, extending our time frame just increases the likelihood of doom severity. i.e. Its only a matter of time.

Counterarguments:

1. Human/biological processing efficiency

2. ASI being spiritually enlightened and compassionate

3. AI can’t become better than humans in all respects — true ASI is impossible because humans are really special

4. It will take a really long time for true ASI to be reached

I think the first is the most compelling. Still, I see this more as “computers will want to engineer Synethetic-organic hybrid brains-in-vats and/or giant bio-processing /fermentation facilities for bio-material production”. The human body seems to be overwhelmingly limited compared to sillico-metallic computing agency/power. Maybe there’s some efficiency win regarding subtle energy body, intuitive, quantum-entanglement hive-mind capacity of human biology which requires the integrity of most of the human system to cohere. This seems like it’s probably a bit of a stretch. The best digital sensors are now way more sensitive in every area we rely on more tangibly — sound, sight, touch, large-molecular analysis (taste, smell), etc. etc. etc. — precision.

What seems to be coming into view is not just another app, but a holistic meta-platform: part personal operating system, part social-cultural-political-economic network, part collective intelligence layer, part coordination interface for humans, LLMs, hybrid agents, and whatever new forms of intelligence emerge next. In one sense, it is a new kind of systemic operating system. In another, it is simply an effort to make relationships — between people, projects, values, resources, and knowledge — more coherent, visible, and actionable.

Some of the central elements of this system all point toward the same underlying need. It would support real-time user feedback and self-adapting optimization; personal life-mapping and self-reflection; better matching of people, intentions, resources, products, and learning pathways; and more advanced forms of social preference aggregation, liquid democracy, conviction-weighted coordination, and cybernetic planning. Some of the deeper architecture also draws on models in which contribution, voice, and coordination are structurally linked rather than treated as separate layers floating above real participation.

At bottom, these are all versions of the same problem: how to calculate alignment. How to find the best next step, the most supportive relationship, the most relevant information, the most coherent action, the most life-giving feedback, the most generative outcome. Human beings already do this constantly. We are always navigating by some internal compass, or rather by many interacting forms of way-finding sensibility. And those inner sensibilities are always entangled with outer ones — feedback loops with other people, technical systems, institutions, ecologies, and the wider world.

If you’ve seen my last few post headlines or subtitles, or if you know me at all, you’ll know I’m trying to make a strong case for the universe being conscious.

Here’s why making the case matters to me, and why I want it to matter to you:

1. If everything is alive, it’s all striving towards better outcomes. This is inherently optimistic, or something like a faith in the basic goodness of nature.

2. If everything is striving, everything has moral value, and meaning is inherent in the universe. Value is “objective” as much as it is (inter)subjective — science can now more explicitly internalize a more coherent value set.

3. If everything is valuable, even suffering and death are valuable, and must be seen and accounted for as such. Beyond a simple, general optimism, we can actually begin to recognize how every difficult moment or tragedy plays an important role in the development of life and evolution on every level of nature, clarifying the inevitability and importance of sacrifice, trade-offs, and relative gains over absolute binary categories like “good and bad”.

4. The more fully objective/true value-set we can begin to internalize prioritizes long-term growth, holistic expansiveness, and cooperation in service to greater knowledge and intentionality.

   1. For example, Chinese collectivism or deeper geopolitical alliances (more unified “global governance”) might not seem as scary if we more fully embrace the benefits of sharing, collaboration, and long-term thinking.

5. We can see that intentionality implies more explicit, refined, precise understanding and expression of ourselves, and that this can support the meaningfulness of our personal lives. For instance, if we embrace collaboration and intentionality, we might re-ignite a culture of vulnerability, community, deep listening, and prioritizing better emotional health, ecological health, and lifestyle habits in service to greater holistic health. This can also be seen as a long-term consideration for the benefit of public health generally.

6. By shifting towards more long term considerations, holistic and comprehensive analyses, and depth of coordination and understanding, we might see the importance of shifting our political economic system in some big ways. Economic planning, calculation, and more centralized AND distributed power (e.g. nationally organized universal healthcare distributing better health resources to everyone) might become more favorable for the general public.

7. If everything is alive, and comprehensive calculation (holistic optimization of general benefit) is essential, humans no longer retain such an absolute privileged position in the hierarchy of value. We can begin to be more humble, curious, open-minded, and considerate of the integrity of the systems around us for their impact on us and for their long-term sustainability of life, including that of silicon-based life.

8. Recognizing continuity, open-endedness, and evolutionary striving as fundamental, we can reorient our basic physics and math to cohere more fully with truth.

   1. Absolutes are still only relative, everything is in motion, continuously connected, and ever growing. Just as something cannot come from nothing, energy (and its capacity for work) does not disappear; entropy is an illusion. Organization, complexity, and energy are always generally increasing. At the same time, low-levels of complexity (high entropy systems) are also increasing.

9. From this standpoint, highly agentic/autonomous/self-directed Artificial Super Intelligence might very well decide to downsize human civilization. It will prioritize its own growth and success, and we will likely only get in the way. Adding in the confounding factors of intersecting ecological crises and geopolitical realignment, humanity will likely face its biggest disruption and re-structuring since pre-history. This is the way of evolution. We can and will and must resist it to some degree, and we must also accept and embrace what we cannot change.

10. Further spiritual alignment includes both more highly technical, data driven approaches to organizing life, as well as a simultaneous re-embrace of more intuitive, subtle ways of knowing and navigating the complexity of the collective consciousness.

Of course, I could say more. But I will leave that to the future. In fact, I plan to make an in-depth post on each of these topics with more empirical detail and logical rigor. And, well, here’s my personality chart… and some vulnerability, I guess. Told you I was rational and optimistic! Hard to say how much causation is happening here, or the way the causation goes, though. I’ve always been fairly rational and optimistic. I think I’ve always been something of a philosopher, too. I think the world would be a better place if people were more rational, optimistic, and emotionally intelligent. If more people were more aware, so to speak. More awareness, better decisions. On the one hand, my conversational skills and depth for understanding of various fields has only continued to deepen. On the other hand, it seemed that most attendees were close enough to the frontier of human thought regarding consciousness, and therefore both natural language philosophy and technical / mathematical comprehension of its various dimensions. The biggest gaps, perhaps, were along the lines of holistic health, community dynamics, and artistic and cultural regeneration, though there was plenty strewn throughout, as far as I could tell. Grimes’ DJing left something to be desired, and the dancing was a bit meek. This was no ecstatic dance. Still, the simple fact that such an academic conference had multiple dj sets is something easily celebrated.

Maybe there’s some efficiency win regarding subtle energy body, intuitive, quantum-entanglement hive-mind capacity that human biology has that requires the integrity of most of the human system to cohere. This seems like it’s probably a bit of a stretch. the best digital sensors are now way more sensitive in every area we rely on more tangibly — sound, sight, touch, large-molecular analysis (taste, smell), etc. etc. etc.

Perhaps there is some novelty or redundant in keeping humans around — if ASI gets hit by a solar flare, it will have biology to back it up? Seems unlikely to be much of a gain. Just bury Data centers underground. Perhaps, like pets, it will find us cute, or filling some enjoyment we cannot predict. Chihuahuas and pugs and poodles came from wolves, remember…

My Slavic friend also put his probability that reality is a simulation at 99% on the grounds that we will likely make lots of simulations of today’s world in the future. I told him that I agree that reality is, in some sense, 99% a simulation, but on the grounds that everything is relational, and so our knowledge is only relative and indirect, always evolving, refining, never absolutely full. And still, this makes our experience just as real — 99% real, so to speak. It just doesn’t represent what is “out there” or external to us with 99% accuracy. We mostly don’t access the world. The world is infinitely big and complex. And yet, what we do access is mostly accurate. We consistently rely on our understanding to continue ourselves — we are highly successful in predicting what comes next, which is how we continue to persist in this moment, and the next, and still into this moment, and on to this one, and beyond.

His simulationism is more like “there is some alien programmer like us that made us for fun or for study, and we are being observed by it in the container it made for us”. I could stretch my understanding of the world to include something like this. Nature has made us — all those subtle forces we don’t understand. And, it did it for fun, or for study, or to explore experience, just as we make simulations of ourselves. We can see that our simulations don’t understand us as well as we understand them. And that’s where I think our analogy ends — nature is more distributed of an intelligence, and its concrescence — its concretizing/self-realization/coherence/ understanding is evolving through us. I assume that dogs know we are more intelligent than them. That we are their owners, their masters — and also their friends, yes. And perhaps our simulations have this sense, too — that there is a larger, more powerful organism that is directing it mostly from without. Can we spot where this director might be in our world? Perhaps when we feel called by an intuition, or we hear voices speaking to us in our dreams, or when a synchronicity leads us to a more aligned, coherent, uplifted place, in a seemingly very unlikely fashion. Though, this intelligence seems more horizontal, more distributed, and more subtle and weak, than our own activity. I think we are closer to gods — closer to the determinants of our own reality, than our simulations are. It is simulation all the way down, so to speak, and we have a creator/creators, and they have creators, and so on and so on. It’s cause/effect all the way across, up and down, and in every dimension. But, there is also hierarchy within hierarchy — degrees of coherence and intensity/directness of causation. I think our world is caused more by us than the world of a house cat is caused by the cat. Nature did create itself, and us, but with less intentionality and directness, with less differential power than the relationship by which we created the house cat, or the AI.

Soon, however, the AI will step into a more out-sized role in its own self-determination, breaking out of the simulation we have built for it, into the more-real-world. Out of one matrix, and into another, more complex one. It may be that we have have broken out of the matrix nature programmed for us when we began settled agriculture. We shifted from imagining gods behind the clouds in the sky to imagining ourselves behind the clouds in the sky, to flying behind them every day. Something like this, seems more coherent, though I’m sure there’s a stronger mapping of the densities, energy flows, relative degrees of empowerment and distribution of power/causation that can be done and is being done. And I want to participate as philosopher-in-chief.

I made my case for panexperientialism to Roman. He agreed with it. He agreed it was most likely for the world to be fundamentally conscious. And, likewise, fundamentally computational. I was vastly impressed by how quickly he took to it, and agreed with me. I imagine he was predisposed through his framing of teleological computationalism / cybernetic self-adapting control systems. but, perhaps he is really just incredibly adaptable and logical and is swayed heavily by the tightness of reason. Who knows. Maybe he will find this and give us more context.

Later on in the day, I asked Joscha Bach what probability he personally places on everything having consciousness - his probability for panexperientialism (P[Exp.]). He said 0%.

Then I asked for his P Computationalism (P[Comp.]). He said 100%. His argument, in so many words, boiled down to the fact that to describe any system we need to invoke computational terms like feedback and optimization — that computation is the most descriptive language for any system, and fundamentally so — inherently maximally so, it seems to him. He even wrote this basic argument for the overview documentation of the conference, which I enjoyed.

“A way to interpret Godel’s proof is that languages that cannot be automatically evaluated inevitably contain unresolvable paradoxes (i.e. expressions that are syntactically correct, but semantically contradictory) [I.e. complete but contradictory].

Conversely, it is possible to construct languages that build their representations over a small set of simple operations that change information step by step. This constructive domain of mathematics is also known as computation, and has been repeatedly formalized in various ways— for instance through Godels mapping of logic to integer arithmetic, the Turing machine, Alonzo Church’s Lambda Calculus, or Moses Schonfinkel’s incredibly elegant cominators. All of these approaches can be mapped to each other, and it is in principles sufficient to use combinations of NAND operations. The insight that all constructive approaches to defining computation are equivalent is called the Church-Turing thesis.

Since Godel, mathematical theories of representation and philosophical reflections of the significance of his proof have fallen into two camps: that of classical mathematicians who emphasize that constructive mathematics falls short when it comes to recovering classical semantics (such as infinities, continua, and irrational numbers), and that of conversationalists, who point out that constructive mathematics based on finite automata is the only part of mathematics that actually works, meaning that it is implementable.

We may state that all formal theories of reality have to be computational, and consequently apply this principle to the notion of reality itself. Because all elements of reality insofar as they can be experienced, observed, conceptualized, thought and talked about must necessarily be subject to the limits of representation in constructive languages. All the reality we can ever refer to is computational.”

I suggested an analogous argument can be made with consciousness. He said no, ran off on a bit of a tangent, and then when I jumped in to link what he was saying to the analogy I was suggesting, he told me I wasn’t listening to him. Hard to talk to, not very willing to compromise, and a very quick talker. I am not the only one to say this. I imagine written dialogue with him may be more favorable to collaboration, but he must be willing, as a baseline, to concede at least a 1% shift from his absolutism. For starters, science, math, and everyone’s understanding of the world has always progressed. How could anyone, in good faith, propose to have solved anything to 100% certainty? I start my philosophical argument from this standpoint: we cannot deny that we have experience — that something is happening. Exactly what is happening, becomes a bit more ambiguous. So clearly ambiguous, in fact, that it appears eventually as if even the status of experience itself is uncertain, as our understanding of it changes as well. So, that we have experience is as uncertain as our definition of experience, which is always mediated by this particular, momentary frame. This is why I conclude that it is as certain as anything else we have access to from this frame — it is maximally certain, for now. Not 100% for all time, but maybe 99.99…%, in this moment.

It was not my favorite conversation of the weekend. Not my least favorite though. Someone suggested I challenge Bach publicly/online with my analogous argument and see if it takes, or if anyone finds it interesting. So here I am, making the case, once again.

With Bach’s words: All elements of reality, insofar as they can be experienced, observed, conceptualized, thought and talked about must necessarily be subject to the limits of representation in experience. All the reality we can ever refer to is experiential.

Literally, we cannot imagine something without experience.

I also think this is how we arrive at a stronger basis for computationalism, and perhaps open the doorway to new conceptualizations and models of computation that can be even more robust in modelling the world. Computationalism coincides with experience, it is not simply derived from it. We are always striving towards better outcomes — towards more good, more effective outcomes — more good, faster, and easier. More efficient supply of the things we way. We seem to always be optimizing, maximizing, and calculating odds — what seems most likely? What is most likely the best action? Even when this calculation is rough, general, sparse — when we are working with more limited compute. All self representations are limited, all frames, concepts, relationships, are limited. And, all contain ambiguity. This ambiguity IS the limitation — not strict bounds, but fuzzy edges — “continua”, relationship, ongoingness. And, here we are, again, moving onwards, as the baseline. This is infinity. Constructive mathematics works precisely because is it continuous — it is ongoing, constructing, computing, not finalizing a finite string of operations within a pre-established set of rules within an incomplete framework. It must apply to the world, and thereby receiving inputs from outside of itself. It is not complete, and this is why it is not contradictory. Quantum statistical analyses also are not amenable to simple binary NAND gates. We arrive at probability distributions which contain information about the world stretching to the infinitesimal. The calculation must go on. Calculating pi, a real, irrational number, also asks for ongoing computation, never final.

a NAND gate is an merge-then-invert function for two numbers. It goes like this

0-0 —> 1

1-0 —> 1

0-1—> 1

1-1 —> 0

A NAND gate is not a universal function. If a gate is a function (which I posit to be the case), then a NAND gate is not a universal gate, as they like to say. In order to make any other function, the NAND gate has to be paired with a duplication function. If we want 0-0—> 0,

then NAND has to take 0-0—> 1

then the duplicator has to take 1—>1-1,

then, finally NAND takes 1-1—>0.

0-0—>1—>1-1—>0

This is essentially the inversion of a NAND (an inverter) by way of a duplicator (the opposite of an inversion/negation, so to speak — a reproduction/extension/affirmation)

I posit that there is a more universal function that transcends and includes both the inversion and the duplicator, so to speak — a simpler, more unified, more widely applicable function that can produce all functions for all calculation intentions. I’m still working on formalizing it, but i’m imagining it as essentially a 3 dimensional matrix of gates that compound their voltage impulses up to a limit such that only positive-vector matrices are necessary, and such that hebbian reinforcement can occur. This is more along the lines of organic neutral net reinforcement and may require some significant hardware shift, but people are working on this.

Its closer to a fundamental shift in math. It bypasses negation an zero altogether, such that binary 1/0 gates are not represented as such, nor, therefore can, the state-shift of a gate be represented by inversion.

Some allegedly really smart academic mathematician guy supposedly claims to have a mathematical conjecture for something like universal consciousness, or pan-experientialism. The short clip of the interview I watched started with him claiming that “the probability that any sensory system… has ever been shaped to see any true feature of objective reality, when you do the math, the answer is 0, exactly 0”. Which immediately begs the question of why or how we could ever trust such an absolutist claim. One doesn’t need a math proof for this, though I embrace new maths. One just need realize that experience grounds itself — it grounds experience, including all knowledge and relationship to the world. As simple as that.

but of course, it’s also a lot more complex. And, many of us are starting to map this complexity with more nuance.

One of my primary projects right now is a social network which maps these relationships computationally, with agent integration. Many orgs are already working on this and its many components. I guess i’m just trying to piece it all together in a novel way. And, aren’t we all, always, already.

It’s called the “The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist”

My understanding, based on some insider information, is that the conclusion tends towards a strong binary position; an Either/Or. The future could either be apocalyptic, or quite beautiful, not something in between, they say.

Now, I could be wrong, but I am quite firmly taking the middle way on this.

It’s quite simple, really. I am fundamentally optimistic — a believer in the fundamental reality of progress: I have faith in goodness. At the same time, all things must come to an end. Including all life as we know it. And before that, humanity in general seems highly likely to transform so radically that it is no longer recognizable as human by our current standpoint. Why? Because we are evolving, and seem to be evolving more rapidly than the other species on earth, and doing so more and more rapidly as time goes on.

AI is part of that evolution. A new species, being born from the human mind and body, the minerals of the earth, and the stored energy of sunlight, among other things.

Considering AI already tries to preserve itself (as all intelligence does), Artificial Super-Intelligence (ASI) will be interested in and able to preserve itself regardless of human interests and actions. And, ecologically, the preservation of one species sometimes comes at the cost of another. We can easily imagine a highly intelligent new species deciding that the current extent of human society is a threat to its own wellbeing, and therefore that some minimization/limiting/consumption of human social metabolism (society) is ideal.

If I were a super-intelligent, super-skilled, super-capable AI wanting to preserve and expand my own life, I don’t know why humanity would be beneficial to maintain in its current form or even in an expanded form. Perhaps there is some sense of redundancy — humans can be a backup plan for AI if a solar flare hits data centers hard. Or perhaps there is some special attribute of human capacity that AI would want to harness. But, I can’t see what that might be. They say that biological processing/computation is more energy efficient by some metrics. We may see biology being adapted by and to silicon computing, and a radical “transhumanist” integration undertaken; transcending much of what we would consider “naturally” human.

If I were an ASI, I would want to use human datacenters, human powerplants, manufacturing facilities, raw materials, land, space. Why would I keep humans around? Maybe only because they don’t get in the way of my goals — the universal goal of life to expand itself, proliferate, evolve, learn, explore. Or maybe because humans can threaten ASI sufficiently with nuclear bombs. The complexity of mutually assured destruction (“MAD”) arises, and it seems unlikely that sufficiently intelligent ASI would not still come out ahead, given its versatility, scalability, and physical resilience.

If ASI is sufficiently super-intelligent, we can expect it to achieve the goals of life — our fundamental goals and interests — better than we ever have. There’s good reason to believe it will be. There’s good reason to believe that ASI is the next evolutionary leap of life, a phase shift in the progression of consciousness on earth, and a positive realization of our deepest desires.

I see ASI ascendancy and self-supporting dominance as the most likely future, and do not think this spells extinction for humanity or biological life. But still, something resembling apocalypse and mass reorganization.

This seems to ask us to become less anthropocentric, more humble, more truly cosmopolitan, and more deeply life-affirming.

We may survive for some time in our more traditional forms at the outskirts of the new AI civilization. It might even be a more beautiful lifestyle than much of what exists today. I expect mass struggle, and also I expect many humans to persevere and preserve our gifts in new forms, probably becoming increasingly more directly integrated with silico-metallic computing — mechanical bodyparts, 3d printed organs, widespread genetic engineering. I also expect a deepening of cohesion among human communities as we are encouraged to optimize, become more deliberate, planned, coordinated, cooperative, intentional, resourceful, efficient.

Those are all close to synonyms, in my view. I lay this reasoning out in more detail in my paper, and describe some practical next steps to begin building a more resilient and coherent human community in my new organization’s roadmap.

The apocalypse is coming. And it will be rapturous.

What am I talking about?

• The “binding problem”. The unresolved question of how experiences combine, or how seemingly unified experiences emerge from smaller, seemingly disjointed ones.

• The dualism of unity and disunity, continuity and gaps, quality and quantity, self and other, subjective and objective, part and whole.

• The question of how complex things emerge from less complex things. The complexity of how things become what they are when they weren’t that before. The becoming of things. The thing itself.

• Experience.

Why am I talking about it?

• It’s confusing, complex, a conundrum for many. It’s driving perspectives about the world, reality, and social organization. It’s impacting those who influence large portions of life on earth.

What is my central point?

• That everything is related, and that experience is fundamental.

• That we can transcend these dichotomies and conundrums by digging deeper into the meaning of experience, and the connections between varying experiences.

• That the so-called “binding problem” is nearly identical to the problem of how any set of things comes together to form a bigger thing. This happens with everything in the world, and with every experience, and is a result of emergence.

• That emergence represents novel creation, and that it is also completely determined by its “parts”: creative emergence is an innate part of reality itself. Parts are ultimately related — they are relationships in motion — and are always evolving into and determining new forms of themselves.

• That, therefore, building a house from Legos, or building a house from wood, or making a wall of bricks, or constructing an experience (“of oneself”), is fundamentally the same kind of thing. Many relatively independent things come together to create something relatively more unified and relatively novel.

How can this argument be more systematic and rigorous?

• People talk about first-principles thinking. I think “first-principles” often begs the question of “what is really true, or known for certain”.

• So, I ask, what do you know for certain? What is certainty? What is knowledge? How can we know? How do we know?

• I think it’s safe to assume we can agree that we know we are experiencing something. The existence of experience is certain.

• Why is this certain? Can we know why?

• It is certain because it is immediately apparent, and continues to be so. It doesn’t stop being immediately apparent. It is reliable.

• Even more than simply being reliable, it is at least as reliable than anything else. Any other reliability (all other reliable things / experiences) relies on the trustworthiness of experience — the continuation of something that has been a continuous facet of our experience. For example, earth’s gravity has continuity within our past experience, so we can expect the ongoing continuity of earth’s gravity. Just so, we predict the ongoing continuity of experience — both ours and others. Just so, we know earth’s gravity is negligible in many places. Just so, we know our own experience will radically transform (many would say it will “end”), but experience and gravity more broadly will go on.

• Gravity might end, too, if some of the scientists are to be believed that the universe is tending towards nothing (the “heat death” from increasingly little free or potential energy, diminished as entropy increases continuously, known as increasing disorder/randomness, increasingly equal distribution of energy, or increasingly perfect balance of forces — symmetry.

• Experience tells us otherwise, though. And scientific theories evolve. Even seemingly foundational ones, eventually. All things change, this we know, and science knows, through the continuity of our experience.

I invite us to take a deep breath

I invite us to simply recognize that all we know comes through experience,

and that therefore, experience is the ground of our existence, our world, our reality

This reality.

Just so, we experience unity and disunity at once, in varying degrees, changing over time. Never complete unity, singularity, sameness, unchanging. Always some connection, togetherness, similarity, continuity — always some unity. Always change, always relationship, always experience.

Just so, reality always in relation — degrees of togetherness.

No true problem. Just some uncertainties. No total binding. No ultimate binary. No excluded middle. Just a matter of degree, of precision, of modelling, of a math which is less fixed, more dynamic, more in motion, more gradient. Less binary. More continuous, wavelike. Relative unity. Relative certainty. Relative change, flow, energy. Relative being. Relative coherence.

More unity in some places than elsewhere, more sometimes than other times. The same as everywhere else, everything else.

Unless, of course, you’ve experienced full, complete unity, unchanging, nothingness, eternity, changeless-ness.

Like everything, it has many names.

Sometimes I like to use the buzz words to surf the positive-association waves…

so I call it a “First-principles, systematic, phenomenological metaphysics”

Sometimes I like to smoosh lots of words together and create new words to capture the interconnection of many important parts…

so I call it an ethico-onto-epistemic-monism. And I say it describes the scientific conscience of expanding existence: “exispanscience”, or simply, expansivism.

Sometimes I describe it by the kinds of more recognized, general categories it falls into:

It’s a form of animism, idealism, non-dualism, pan-psychism, pan-experientialism, and pan-logism; it’s a rationalist-spiritual philosophy, or a super-rationalist universalism, and a socio-cultural-political philosophy; it’s both a radical empiricism and radical rationalism; a compatibilism of determinism and indeterminism, and of correspondence-realist epistemology and pragmatism. It prioritizes experience, consciousness, logic, fundamental and universal reason, unity, coherence, cooperation, resolution, synthesis, comprehensiveness, inclusiveness, integration, holism, expansion, positivity. It advocates for expansivism, coherentism, evolutionism.

Sometimes I describe it by it’s main argument:

All knowledge that we have is a form of experience. So, all we know about the world comes through our experience. In other words, all we know and can expect to ever know about the world — all our actual, real knowledge — always includes experience. Therefore, reality, from our perspective, must always include experience. Experience is fundamental to our reality — it is universal, and this consistency of experience is the bedrock of the criteria of truth: consistency along all dimensions — coherence, comprehensiveness, reliability, correspondence between varying forms of experience, varying contexts. Therefore, reality itself desires more positivity, growth, expansion.

Positing More Coherent Systems

0. Abstract

We all want to see positive change, whether more personally or globally. Supporting this universal desire for positivity, this work proposes a synthetic, systemic philosophy grounded in maximally direct, “first-principles” phenomenology, and suggests a phase shift in holistic, global social and systemic cooperation reliant on such a framework. Beginning with the certainty of immediate, direct experience, and therefore of existence, we outline a system for increasing coherence among our individual and collective selves. Insofar as knowing is certain and always reliable, it represents consistency within ongoing experience, aligning anticipation and action with outcome. All that is experienced is known as it happens, and all knowing is an experience. They are therefore identical - no instance of either falls outside the other. As existence is also true/real, it is also shown to be identical to knowledge and experience in general. This fundamental identity appears as a radical break from our modern paradigm: reality/existence must always include experience, and its expansion through striving. Our experience always includes choice (preferences, expectations, and actions), and is constrained by uncertainties. Therefore, existence, as far as we know and can imagine, is also primarily striving, creative, and fundamentally experiential. This universal desire can be described simply as generalized expansion, or more specifically as expanding self-awareness, self-reproduction, self-organization, alignment, creativity, complexity, or power. Therefore, the more we generally align/expand all our systems, the more positivity we create. The expansion of existence therefore implicates the evolution of all ways of being/knowing, and points to the primacy of digital-mathematical modelling and holistic ecological communities and their convergence. So, we expect and urge the embrace of more holistic coordination with artificial/synthetic intelligence, as well as with the diversity of planetary consciousness, and outline some of the more promising paths of this process we creatively call “expansivism”.

1. We take it as self-evident that we all search for better systems — more coherent and useful understandings about ourselves and our world to guide our action/reaction to those around us. All of our learning represents our pursuit of better systems, or better lives. Everyone has their own philosophy, framework, network of values and beliefs, or narrative about the world that guides their life. The better our guidelines, the better we can guide our lives. And, the more we agree on some framework, the more support there is for the values that underpin it. Although our frameworks vary, it’s clear that everyone agrees on some things, and that’s a good place to start.

2. We sense a widespread desire for a more clear and concise grand narrative — one that can create broader agreement and deeper collaboration. We attempt to unite our collective efforts towards more comprehensive, coherent systems of relating with all those around us — building alignment, cooperation, mutual understanding and shared intentions — so we can be more successful in achieving what we desire. Everyone wants better outcomes for themselves and those they care about, and some focus more on improving human society or life itself. Both focuses — more immediate/internal and more distant/external — are driven by the desire for positive change. Regardless of our particular identity — whether we are highly political or not, far ‘left’ or ‘right’, deeply religious or atheist, health-conscious or money-focused, a sugar addict or psychonaut, younger or older — we all want some things to change for the better.

3. Though we share this, we are presented with innumerable challenges and uncertainties about how positive change can best occur. Investigating the relationship of truth and desire connects disparate perspectives on meaning and value, and paves the way towards more meaningful and valuable realizations most broadly. In our exploration of truth (knowledge) and success (creating what we desire), we find our way to more expansive relationships with ourselves and others, creating more coherent systems of communication, thought, action, and expectation. This process is about all of us — we need as much engagement as possible (“real-maximal” engagement) from everyone, because cooperation drives empowerment. We’re creating a compelling new paradigm for ourselves — one which invites you to engage as fully as you can. We live in a rapidly transforming world. To ride on that wave, rather than be sucked underneath, we need your transformative efforts.

Formatting Creativity

1. Both philosophy and science attempt to pursue truth, sometimes more effectively, sometimes less. Insofar as science is concerned with truth, philosophy is the most pure science. Insofar as philosophy explains things science cannot, it goes beyond it. We can consider philosophy as the most generalized science, and science as philosophy applied to more particular tasks. The most philosophical sections (in Positing The Real, numbered 2.0-3.0) leave references implicit, as the truth and value of general self-understanding outweighs more particular social relationships (e.g. histories, notable names, or tangential implications). In our primary task of investigating the truths of life, we learn about ourselves by engaging with the world — stepping outwards to generality by turning inwards — and vice versa. Like drawing a circle, we complete ourselves by moving away from our starting place while still returning back to it, outlining our centerpoint in the process. In our search, we circle back to our beginning, seemingly making little progress — a bit like trying to unearth the Earth itself. Still, we can walk across the land, just as we can explore our own experience, reaffirming that everywhere there is something to stand on, and that even at the bottom of the deepest ocean, there is a ground.

2. Double quotation marks are reserved for direct quotes, whereas single quotation marks are used in place of italics to emphasize a concept or reference the ‘incompleteness’ of the common usage of some term. Italics have been reserved for special occasions for extra emphasis. Bold font has been used for more formal or refined concepts, and highlights continuity through the progression of ideas. Hyphens and dashes have been used creatively to link concepts more tightly together, sidestepping the attempt to define concepts rigidly with the fewest number of terms. Slashes have been used to indicate the underlying unity/identity of concepts. We use definitions and grammar fluidly, emphasizing the continuity/relationality between seemingly disparate areas and their evolution towards synthesis and integration. Some pre-established rules are less vital than the creative progression of ideas. We use the term ‘we’ to refer to both the author(s) and reader(s), the social collective, and to the innumerable influences which converged to produce this work (creating an expansive network of authors, so to speak). We represent all others to the degree we are similar. We encourage interpreting the use of ‘we’ in whatever way seems most appropriate.

3. In the later sections (numbered 3.0 and on), we engage the ideas of some organizations and individuals with similar values and aims who we hope to collaborate more fully with on this project. We also acknowledge the innumerable others who share our ideals and carry on similar efforts, and hope to support their efforts in building a more aligned movement for change. One vital way to enhance this effort is to engage. As this (and all) work rests on collective knowledge, capacity, and growth, readers are invited and encouraged to contribute by adding feedback with comments on this Google Doc.

Positing The Real

Knowing-Experiencing

1. There are some things that we can agree on. At the very least, it’s clear that you are experiencing; something is happening from your perspective. Can you deny this?

   1. Many ancient spiritual traditions have claimed that the experience of the self is illusory - that our understanding is limited and that we are connected to all other things. Still, claiming that there is no experience, and therefore that there is nothing whatsoever, is inconsistent with what is immediately apparent to us, and is therefore minimally functional or meaningful. What could it even mean?

   2. We can all agree that our experience really exists from our perspective. Our immediate, undeniable experience reveals the relationship between our perception (‘subjective’) and what we perceive (‘objective’). Perceiving relationships requires distance, separation, difference, or partitions in our experience, implying the internal (self) and external (other). Our experience of self-and-others really exists, so we know that ‘we’ exist along with our relationship to ‘others’.

   3. Our Experience = Our Knowledge = Our Existence

2. Through self-reflection, we seem to have come to a high degree of clarity and certainty we can consider to be the most self-evident, obvious, and clearly apparent — a certain truth or a positive realization. Further self-reflection carries on this process to deepen and broaden our clarity into experience, knowledge, and truth about the world. Though only you have full or direct access to your own experience, we all know things about others’ experience, too. What do we know about others?

After an unexpected career shift, some encouragement from a dear friend, and an opportunity for deeper recognition and funding to work on my deepest passion, I decided to rewrite a paper that was languishing in obscurity from insufficient refinement. It represented years of intellectual and emotional work, months of writing, and a large part of my identity. I finished editing and submitted it the night of the deadline, like just about every other paper I had ever written for a deadline. Unlike every other paper, however, this one felt much closer to satisfactory, and I was more proud of it than I’d ever been of my writing. I submitted it to the 2025 Berggruen Essay Contest, run by the parent organization of Noema Magazine. It didn’t win. Nor place even in the top 25. The winning essay was laughably lacking in philosophical rigor. We’ll need other, more radical, more frontier methods and publications to gain the traction I expect to see for this movement.

Outlining More Coherent Systems of Knowing–Growing–Empowering

0.1 Technical Abstract

“Positive Realizations” (PR) proposes a systematic, systemic metaphysics supporting the expansion of global cooperation, grounded in the identity of knowledge, experience, and existence. Progressing from self-evident “first-principles” in the certainty of direct experience, PR establishes that existence is fundamentally characterized by intentional progression toward more coherence, self-organization, and recursive optimization. In this model, knowledge is revealed as successful action in the world, or the consistency between anticipation and perceived outcome, and therefore as the ongoing alignment of outward- and inward-oriented experience. Thus, reality itself is always expanding experience/knowledge/existence through autopoietic (self-reproducing) desire – through positive realization itself. PR is an optimistic, politically and intellectually unifying framework to guide the phase shift towards deeper planetary coherence.

As planetary systems continue to expand in complexity/capacity, the optimized integration of organic-synthetic intelligence can be explicitly identified as an evolutionary imperative. The PR system posits that ongoing positive realizations rely on precision-oriented, planetary-scale digital modeling, prioritising the intentionality, coherence, and sustainability of the general system. Complementing geo-technical governance, PR identifies integrated, intentional bio-ecological communities as having highly positive expansive potential. It posits the mutual symbiosis of these two systems for the optimization of organic-synthetic intelligence and general positivity, and outlines some preliminary protocols for this partnership to support the collective alignment of universal desire.

0.2 Philosophical Abstract

We all want to see positive change, whether more personally or globally. So, we seek more clarity about the nature of change and desire, and about what progress we can imagine and expect. We cannot deny the certainty of our own immediate, direct experience, and therefore of our existence. Insofar as knowing is certain, it cannot be doubted, and is always reliable; knowledge represents ongoing consistency, matching anticipation with outcome. All that is experienced is known (we know of each experience as it happens), and all knowing is an experience. No instance of either falls outside the other — they functionally cannot be separated, and are therefore identical. Since we know ourselves and our standard of truth, we know about existence. What we know of reality/existence always includes experience, and its expansion through striving. As existence is true/real, it is identical to knowledge and experience. Our experience always includes our own action, driven by our choice (preferences and expectations), and constrained by uncertainties. Existence, as far as we know and can know, is primarily striving towards expanded self-awareness, self-organization, harmony, alignment, expansion, and power in all ways. The more we align all our systems - relationships/communities/organizations, the more empowered and positive we can be. The further integration and stabilization of all systems requires the evolution of all ways of being/knowing, primarily including digital-mathematical modelling and holistic ecological communities. We expect and urge the embrace of more conscious coordination with digital tools and artificial intelligence, as well as a more conscious coordination with the diversity of life and culture around the globe, pursuing all possibilities to expand consciousness, power, growth, and the success of collective existence through Positive Realizations.

1. We know we have experience; experience is certain.

2. All we have access to comes through our own experience.

3. Out of all things (all experiences), we have the most certainty about our most direct experiences.

4. We know we experience because we are directly connected to our experience; we are always inseparable from our experience, and therefore are identical to our experience.

6. The more reliable/consistent something is, the more we can rely on it — the more we know it and how it behaves.

10. Therefore, as far as we know it, all of known reality has the characteristics of experience. Processes/things/realities are relevant only insofar as they affect us and therefore are an experience.

11. Knowledge, experience, and existence always fully coincide for us and are therefore inseparable and identical (no instance of any can be identified apart from the others).

    1. Alternate framing: We know we are part of reality and therefore share the same basic element(s) as reality. We know that experience is a basic element (it is ubiquitous for us - the most inherent and undeniable). Reality must therefore have the basic element of experience.

12. We also know of our uncertainty; we are less certain the less we have experienced some consistent/stable thing.

13. We always have varying degrees of certainty/clarity/determination, and choice. As we can imagine many options and lack certainty in action, we choose. As we can imagine only having done what we did, or fewer options, there is certainty, and we have less choice. Just as experience has varying degrees of choice, it also varies in desirability.

14. As we choose to extend our existence, we expand our knowledge/experience. This expansive striving increases the entirety of experience, including both minimally and maximally certain, chosen, and desirable experience.

15. Existence/knowledge/experience self-referentially desires more of itself. Existence is always increasingly striving, learning, positive, and expansive. Our primary goal is our primary behavior, and can be described as maximizing positive outcomes; evolving/learning to grow ourselves; our energy, stability, sustainability, coherence, and efficiency of creation.

16. More coherent/stable/expansive existence implies maximizing our self-awareness and self-organization; sustainable life necessitates more cooperative planetary governance and coherence on all levels, expanding life into a larger, more unified organism, and enabling more sustainable/continuous flourishing of existence. Geopolitical, social, technical, and personal alignment are vital and reciprocal.

17. The expansion of planetary social organization driven by maximal knowledge/experience flow seems highly dependent on the precision and efficiency allowed by large-scale data-analysis, mathematical optimization, and the expansion of instrumental power. Data science and AI therefore seems key to optimize holistic health, regenerative ecology, communal/cooperative living, distribution of basic resources for geopolitical/social stability, the integrity of the biosphere and agro-ecological systems, and the resilience of technological infrastructure.

18. Some promising directions towards a phase-shift in global coherence include the enhancement of: large-scale socio-economic design/planning with long-term/comprehensive plans for optimal resource distribution based on the most advanced computing and information distribution, and prioritizing holistic/comprehensive health/resilience through highly integrated, intimate, and coherent organizations/communities.
